Hawai'i is a chain of islands that has an interesting history of governing factions on the different islands and a story about the death of European explorer, Captain Cook.
The leading theory as to the origin of the ancient Hawaiians is that settlers came in from the Marquesas Islands (due west of Peru) around the 300 AD. Once they came to the island and established a steady population, the various chiefs known as ali'i launched wars against each other in efforts to control more land and protect from rivals.
In 1778, Captain Cook arrived in Hawai'i on an expedition funded by John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich (yes, same guy they named the sandwich after, cool eh?). When Cook was on the island the first time he wrote down the island's native name "Owyhee". He visited a second time, unfortunately much more agressive. He kidnapped the chief and demanded a ransom, as he'd done on other islands like Tahiti. However, he'd underestimated the Hawaiians' ferocity, and he was killed. His death gave the islands publicity, and many new Europeans arrived on the island, bringing many new diseases with them that killed half the native Hawaiian population.
